Gibben Nemesio is in trouble.
His parents are dead, his sister is missing, and he's been left the sole provider for his two younger brothers. With a war brewing in the east and no guarantee of surviving another brutal winter, Gib's life is plagued by uncertainty. To make matters worse, he suddenly finds himself uprooted from his home and drafted into the army.
Forced to leave his siblings behind, Gib reports to Silver City, where he enrolls in the legendary Academy of Arden. An outsider and misfit, Gib struggles to blend in among the highborn city folk. His charming candor eventually wins him a handful of friends—an enigmatic mage trainee with a secret, a young girl who has defied tradition by joining the military, and a prince looking to escape his stifling life. But his new-found comrades may not be able to help when Gib alone overhears a traitorous plot—a scheme so horrible that if seen to fruition, all of Arden will suffer for it. It's up to Gib to convince the High Council of Arden to act, to stop the terrible danger, before it's too late.

This isn't the best book I have ever read, but it is far, far from the worst. It is deffinentally made for younger readers, preteens or younger, but isn't a bad read for an adult either. The writing and words used are sometimes a bit too simplistic, in my opinion, and gives the idea that the author thinks the reader isn't too capable of reading big words, hence why I say it feels like a book for preteens or younger. It does deal with some fairly adult themes, such as a boy trying to figure out his own sexuality, bullying, and the like, and in a way that is resourceful to both the reader and the subject matter. I do feel like there is a little too much focus, perhaps, on the main character being gay, with it at times feeling kind of flat and fake, like the character's entire personality circled around how gay he is. As such, it felt a little unnatural, and I wish the author had addressed it more as a side thing, with the actual focus being on the other aspects of the character's personality. Being gay is not a personality trait, and shouldn't be used as such, basically, and while it wasn't always shown as such, it did seem to be used this way emough to make me roll my eyes a bit. The later books in the series do a lot better job of treating the idea of a gay character the same as a strait character and not using gay as a personality trait.
Aside from that, the plot is pretty decent. It's rather predictable, particularly for anyone who's read a lot of fantasy books, but, to me, that doesn't detract from the story itself. It's a decent comming of age story, and even as an adult reading it I did enjoy it.

A Call to Arms Book One of the Chronicles of Arden eBook Shiriluna Nott SaJa H Reviews
I'm a fan of both fantasy and m/m, so finding another novel that combines the two is always exciting.
Gibben is conscripted, and forced to leave his two younger brothers to tend the family farm in his absence. Once at the Academy, he soon finds himself becoming embroiled in scheme upon scheme as he attempts to adjust to his new reality. Combine that with his dawning feelings for his roommate, and you have an interesting combination.
There is just enough world building without being hit over the head with it OR being subjected to information dumps. The plot moves along smoothly, doing a good job of advancing both the intrigue and the romance.
A few characters seem to fit into archetypal molds, which isn't a BAD thing, but I certainly hope I am wrong about the identities of the villains.
All in all, this is interesting enough that I am looking forward to the second novel in the series.
One of the better books I have read this year, and I read about 5 books a week, so that is a huge compliment. I loved the world that this author created, and I am dying to get back into it... my only complaint is Where is Book 2??!! LOL
The writing reminds me of my beloved fantasy novels I read as a teen, just getting into the genre, Mercedes Lackey, Marion Zimmer Bradley and Anne McCaffrey. The vibe is very similar, and it is wonderful, just sucking you in. I cried and laughed and smiled and yelled... the sign of a wonderful book.
I adored the characters, and truly felt for them. I wont tell you anything about the story, because other people here have given that type of blurb, but I will say if you like fantasy, and intrigue, or LGBT novels of any type, you must read this book. The gay is not like the more hardcore m/m books out there, it is much more along the lines of Vanyel from Lackey's universe. Very well done, and perfect for the story. It is not what the book is about, it just happens to be part of the characters, like hair color. I loved how it was done.
I totally want more books!!! ) I would have happily paid way more for it.
I really liked this story. It was definitely more geared towards a Young Adult audience than an adult one than I expected, but it was still a lovingly created universe with a number of extremely believable characters that I grew to greatly appreciate. The dialogue was only so-so, especially when thing began to heat up, but the world was extremely thought out, the intricate characterization and massive cast kept me engaged, and the book was short enough for me to finish in two days. I liked the romance in the book, although I wished throughout that the main characters were a bit older, and I am looking forwards to reading the next book.
I really like this book because of its painstaking innocence, the healthy growing romance, and the unshakable, healthy friendship between the characters. Plot line is unusual, interesting, and keeps you wanting for more. Character developments was really good, but I felt like the author kept a certain character from developing steadily like the other characters. He's really a minor character. The main character, however, is a different story. I love Gib so much, it hurts. He. Is. Amazing. No joke. He is so sweet and selfless and so freakin' loving, that he doesn't even take care of himself. Always about the others. Joel, though, struck me as the femenine type, although older than Gib, he doesn't really have the potential to defend himself. I mean, he's a great character and all that, but hey-maybe more feistiness and a dash of protectiveness for Gib's benefit? Just an opinion. Overall, it's a job well done. I'm looking forward for the next installment...
This was a surprise. I didn't even remember buying this book but I actually opened it accidentally and began reading before I noticed I wasn't reading the book I had expected. Even then...I couldn't stop. This is an interesting new world with wonderful new characters. The world building was top notch. I never felt completely lost and quite quickly began to see Arden as a full world with its own life. I found only a few characters uninteresting and even then as they came together in the overall plot I never felt any were unnecessary or overly contrived.
The story was stellar in my eyes. The informed world building and interesting characters all came together in an organic plot that made real sense for the characters. Nothing forced. This Author has a real feel for this world and characters. The writing was wonderful and flowed freely.
